Neuro Note #4: A List of Interesting & Important Resources!

In no particular order, I have provided some podcasts, videos, articles, and social media accounts for learning more about people and conditions with which occupational therapists may work! I chose to make this list for my final Neuro Note because I couldn't pick just one condition or one individual to share- there are so many interesting resources! Enjoy

1) Getting Curios with Jonathan Van Ness Podcast, Episode: What Are Strokes? with Dr. Lina Nih
Description: Jonathan Van Ness is a hairdresser, podcast host, and TV personality who stars in "Queer Eye" an amazing make over documentary series on Netflix. On his podcast, Jonathan has quests for 30 minutes each week to answer questions that he is curious about. The episodes range from " What's Going on in the Middle East Right Now?" to " How Can We Be Less Rude to Bees?".
In the episode "What Are Strokes?" Dr. Lina Nih discusses her research as a Post Doc at UCLA in which she studies how vessels function in the brain, specifically brain tissue regeneration and how to promote vessel formation after strokes.

4) "What Happens When You Have a Disease Doctors Can't Diagnose? a TEDTalk by Jennifer Brea
Description: This is a video that we saw in class, and I had to include it because Jennifer gives such an honest and touching recount of her personal experience.
"Five years ago, TED Fellow Jennifer Brea became progressively ill with myalgic encephalomyelitis, commonly known as chronic fatigue syndrome, a debilitating illness that severely impairs normal activities and on bad days makes even the rustling of bed sheets unbearable. In this poignant talk, Brea describes the obstacles she's encountered in seeking treatment for her condition, whose root causes and physical effects we don't fully understand, as well as her mission to document through film the lives of patients that medicine struggles to treat."

In the video, Dillan's mom states, "Not being able to speak is not the same as not having something to say." Dillan describes using the iPad to communicate as being freed. Assistive technology can really transform an individual's life!

7) "ALS: It's My Story Too" an article by MDA/ ALS News Magazine Online
Description: "ALS doesn’t just affect the person with the disease — it has a profound impact on those who care about that person, too. On MDA’s website during May, an interactive feature, "ALS: It's My Story, Too," provides an outlet for spouses and partners, children, friends, relatives and co-workers to describe how the disease has impacted their lives. Below are several postings from MDA’s 2011 "It's My Story, Too." Sadness and loss are common themes, but so too are inspiration and hope."
As occupational therapists, it is always important to keep the experiences of family members and caregivers in mind.
